DEVELOPMENT

First and foremost, Chaplains are Religious Leaders. They must develop a solid pastoral identity in which they understand their role as a spiritual leader. If this is not understood they will only become the fun guy to hang out with or just another Officer. But if this is developed well, the Chaplain can become a powerful force multiplier by being a source of strength for Soldiers to lean on, especially during the challenging times in life.

Secondly, a Chaplain should be a good Staff Officer. They do not have to be the best Staff Officer but should be competent enough to understand and speak the Commander’s language. Great ministry happens when it is in alignment with the operational pace and plans of the unit.

Religious Affairs Specialists also have a role in helping the Chaplain take care of both aspects. They assist the Chaplain in taking care of the religious needs of the formation and help the Chaplain administratively. They should be aware of what is happening in and around the unit to be able to pave the way for the Chaplain to be in the right place at the right time.
